How to clean up your ignition - High security versus regular ignition
Your ignition contains many parts, it has pins, springs, core cylinder, housing and other tiny ignition components.
Ignition Fatigue- For many years fatigue has been the most common cause of ignition failure. The materials that compose the ignition are made of metal of course but contain cast aluminum and zinc mixtures as far as my experience goes. These materials experience light fatigue elements that come with extreme cold or heat. These changes in temperature cause the ignition materials to bend back and forth and weaken over time. Then one day something breaks.
Honda High Security Ignition Repair
High Security Style Ignitions like Honda:
High security ignitions are more complex and require more attention when having them cleaned or repaired. Ignition repair is much more complicated when it comes to Volkswagen and german ignitions in general. Asian market cars are also quite a challenge but Honda in my opinion is one of the most problematic ignitions.
Most of my ignition lockouts are similar, pins snap and leave the ignition stuck in its off position.
This happens when one of the pins gets damaged on it's edge and when sliding your key it stick out of the ignition cylinder instead of sinking in.
Honda Ignition Repair Aftermath
The whole procedure takes close to an hour and sometimes more, it's best to prepare some fresh pins for this job just in case you have to replace many of the pins and not just one.
If you can't contact a locksmith for any reason it is best you have a metal key (fresh cut) so you can test the ignition after it has been repaired.
I also suggest you be very gentle when removing the ignition, gentle as much as you can so you won't damage the immobilizer antenna. Without it you can't start the car.
Drilling - In some cases you will have to drill the pin out - simply because you are unable to extract the lock pin damage free. Sometimes it's just jammed and stuck real hard.
I suggest having tweezers, thin drill bits or similar to help you operate on the ignition.
In most cases the ignition requires good clean up but in some cases the problem is more severe and many pins need replacement. I suggest turning to your local locksmith.
